Orthodontic treatment is a journey toward achieving a beautiful, healthy smile. However, along the way, you or your child might encounter some unexpected issues. At Potter Orthodontics, we believe in empowering our patients with the knowledge to handle common orthodontic emergencies. This guide offers practical advice on what to do when facing issues like broken brackets, loose wires, and mouth sores, ensuring you feel prepared and reassured.

Broken Brackets

Brackets are the small metal or ceramic devices attached to each tooth that hold the archwire in place. Occasionally, they can become loose or break.

What to Do

First, assess the damage by checking if the bracket is still attached to the wire or if it’s completely detached. If the bracket is still attached, gently push it back into place using a cotton swab or the eraser end of a pencil, then apply orthodontic wax over the bracket to keep it stable and reduce irritation. Although a broken bracket isn’t an immediate emergency, schedule an appointment with Dr. Potter as soon as possible to repair the bracket and maintain your treatment progress.

Loose or Poking Wires

Loose or poking wires can cause discomfort and irritation to your cheeks, gums, or tongue.

What to Do

If a wire is sticking out and causing discomfort, try gently pushing it back into place using a clean pencil eraser or a cotton swab. If repositioning the wire isn’t possible, use sterilized nail clippers to carefully trim the wire, cutting as close to the teeth as possible to avoid swallowing the clipped piece. Apply a small piece of orthodontic wax to the end of the wire to cushion it and reduce irritation. Then, contact Potter Orthodontics to fix the wire properly and ensure your treatment stays on track.

Mouth Sores

Mouth sores are a common side effect of orthodontic treatment, especially when braces or aligners first go on.

What to Do

Rinse your mouth with a mixture of a teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water several times a day to promote healing and reduce discomfort. Over-the-counter products like Orajel or Anbesol can be applied directly to the sore areas to numb the pain. Additionally, applying orthodontic wax over any brackets or wires causing irritation can create a smooth surface and minimize further irritation. Continue brushing and flossing regularly to prevent infection and speed up the healing process.

Lost Separators

Separators (spacers) are tiny rubber bands placed between your teeth to create space for orthodontic bands.

What to Do

It’s normal for separators to fall out once they’ve created enough space. However, if a separator falls out prematurely, it should be replaced. Call Potter Orthodontics to determine if the separator needs to be replaced before your next scheduled appointment.
