Your First Visit

Each individual’s orthodontic case is different and deserves personalized attention. Your first visit is an important opportunity for us to get to know you and what you want to accomplish with your orthodontic treatment. We believe that orthodontic problems involve more than just teeth, so we look at the entire facial structure when treating our patients. Quality care and individualized attention are the standards of our practice. We pride ourselves in taking the time necessary to explain our procedures each step of the way and answer any questions you might have. The more you know about your care, the better the results.

At your first visit Dr. Potter will discuss your desires, take your initial orthodontic records, and perform a comprehensive orthodontic examination to determine the status of your orthodontic health. If it is determined that orthodontic care is necessary, we will make a recommendation of treatment based on your specific situation. Dr. Potter will explain in detail your orthodontic problems, the individualized treatment needed, how long it will take, and how much it will cost. We ask that you bring your insurance information to the first visit so that we may determine the benefits you have available. We will also go over with you with the different payment options that we provide. At this time we will schedule your next appointment to begin treatment.

What is an orthodontic emergency?

So, what exactly qualifies as an orthodontic emergency? It’s a great question to start with. Here’s what usually happens when a patient experiences an orthodontic emergency:

  • Severe Pain — If you experience intense, unrelenting pain in your mouth, teeth, or braces, it’s considered an emergency. This level of discomfort requires immediate evaluation and intervention.
  • Trauma or Injury — Any trauma or injury to your face, teeth, or mouth should be treated as an orthodontic emergency. Accidents can disrupt your braces and cause potential harm, necessitating prompt assessment.
  • Sudden Swelling — If you notice sudden and significant swelling in your gums, cheeks, or face, this may indicate an infection or other serious issue. Swelling of this nature warrants immediate attention.
  • Loose or Dislodged Appliance — When a key part of your orthodontic appliance becomes loose, dislodged, or broken, it can disrupt your treatment progress. This situation requires immediate evaluation to avoid setbacks.
  • Bleeding — If your mouth is bleeding uncontrollably or extensively, it’s essential to address the cause promptly. Excessive bleeding can indicate an emergency that needs urgent care.
  • Loss of a Tooth — If a tooth is knocked out or becomes severely displaced, it’s an orthodontic emergency. Immediate attention may help save the tooth and prevent further complications.
  • Unmanageable Discomfort — If you experience extreme discomfort that cannot be alleviated with home remedies, it’s time to seek professional help. Persistent and unmanageable discomfort suggests an orthodontic emergency.

In any dental emergency, time is of the essence. Quick action is your best ally, so don’t hesitate to get in touch. At Potter Orthodontics, your safety and comfort are our top priorities, and we’re here to guide you through any unexpected twists and turns.

Recognizing Major Emergencies

While orthodontic issues are usually manageable, there are rare situations that require immediate attention. Here’s what you need to know about major orthodontic emergencies:

  • Swollen Gums or Severe Infections — If you notice swelling, redness, or any signs of infection in your gums or mouth, it’s crucial not to delay. These issues can be serious and even life-threatening. Contact us right away, and we’ll guide you through the necessary steps to address the situation.
  • Trauma or Injury to Your Face, Teeth, or Mouth — Accidents can happen, and if you experience any trauma to your facial area, teeth, or mouth while wearing an appliance, don’t wait. Reach out to us immediately for guidance, and we will assess the situation to provide the appropriate care.
  • Unbearable and Unmanageable Pain — If you find yourself in excruciating pain within your mouth or face, don’t tough it out. Pain that is severe and unmanageable should never be ignored. Get in touch with us or go to an emergency room to alleviate your discomfort and address the underlying issue promptly.
